First, so you do not search in the wrong place

What you will find here is the textile part of the system: the bag the vacuum discharges into, and through which the water leaves. Many machines ship with a standard bag that is either too coarse, too small or worn out after a season. That is usually the part people replace.
Why filter the discharge at all?
A pond loses water at every clean if what comes off the bottom simply goes to a drain or across the lawn. On a small garden pond that is several hundred litres, and it has to be made up again.
Fresh mains water is not neutral. It has a different temperature, a different hardness and none of the micro-organisms that keep the pond stable. An occasional partial water change is sensible; an unintended large one at every clean is not.
Filtering the discharge solves that. The solids stay in the bag and the water goes back where it came from.
The sequence, in four steps
The pond vacuum or a suitable pump lifts the sludge and water mixture off the bottom.
The mixture travels through a hose into the filter bag, which lies at the bank.
The solids stay in the bag; the water passes through the fabric.
The water that emerges runs back into the pond, over a channel, a liner or straight down the bank.
Step four is the one people get wrong. To return filtered water to pond level, the bag has to lie so that the water can find its way back. A bag sitting ten metres away on a lawn will filter perfectly well, and the water will soak into the grass. A slight fall towards the pond, or a liner underneath, is enough.
Which grade for which pond?
The bag you choose decides how clear the returning water is and how often you have to stop.

The finer the fabric, the more stays in the bag and the faster it loads. That is not a drawback of a particular version; it is the basic rule of mechanical filtration.
Getting the connection right
The bag is pulled over the outlet of the vacuum or the end of the hose and secured there. For that to sit tightly, the opening has to match the outside diameter. Openings of 70 and 105 millimetres are available.
Two things make the difference in practice. Length: a longer bag has more filter area, spreads the solids out and needs interrupting less often. Closure: a version with a full-length zip empties far more easily than one that only opens at the end.
What pond vacuum water return is not
It is not water treatment. The bag separates solids mechanically. Dissolved nutrients, ammonium, phosphate and bacteria run back into the pond with the water.
Anyone trying to get an algae bloom under control will not do it through filter fineness but through the nutrient balance: limit leaf input, adjust fish stock and feeding, use plants as nutrient sinks.
And it does not replace a permanent pond filter. A circulation filter works continuously and biologically; bag filtration works occasionally and mechanically. Both have their place.
Common questions about the water return

No. We make the filter bags the vacuum discharges into. The machine itself comes from a specialist dealer.
Does every bag fit every vacuum?
No. The outside diameter of the outlet or hose end decides. Openings of 70 and 105 millimetres are available; for anything different we make the bag to your dimensions.
How much water do I still lose?
Some always stays in the bag and bound up in the sludge, and a little evaporates or soaks away along the drainage path. The loss is a fraction of what you would lose without a return.
Will the returning water be clear?
Clearer than what was lifted, yes. How much clearer depends on the grade. At 400 µm fine suspended solids run back with it; at 100 µm considerably less. No grade returns completely clear water.
Does the bag have to be changed during the clean?
On a heavily silted pond, yes, often several times. A longer bag and a coarser grade extend the time between changes. Plan a second bag so you are not waiting mid-job.
Can I do this with an ordinary dirty water pump?
In principle yes, provided the pump can move the solids and does not block itself. A pond vacuum is built for it; a dirty water pump is not always. Check the permissible particle size in the pump’s data sheet.
