Finer on paper, more open in the material

This is the only grade in the range that is not a woven fabric but a needle felt. That single difference produces a property most buyers do not expect.

At a nominal 5 microns it carries the finest rating of our three plating anode bags. At the same time it has the highest documented air permeability of the three, 125 l·dm⁻²·min⁻¹, more than twice the 15 micron standard grade and five times the 25 micron grade.

Why a needle felt behaves differently from a woven fabric

A woven fabric is made of yarns crossing at regular intervals, with defined openings between them. Separation happens at the surface, at that plane of openings.

A needle felt is built differently. Fibres are laid down without orientation and mechanically entangled by fine barbed needles. There is no single plane of openings but a three-dimensional pore system with a high void fraction, and separation is distributed across the whole cross section.

Both things therefore follow at once: a needle felt can capture finer particles and still be highly permeable, because there is a lot of space between the fibres. The surface is additionally thermally smoothed, which makes the bag easier to handle and reduces fibre shedding.

At 400 g/m² this is also the heaviest of the three. More material means more fibre volume and more capacity to take up residue before the bag noticeably blinds.

When this grade is the right call

The usual trigger is concrete. Inclusions or roughness show up on plated parts, they point to fine particles in the electrolyte, and the standard grade is to be swapped for something finer.

It also makes sense in processes with high surface requirements, PCB plating among them, and on anodes that shed a lot of fine material by design.

What the change does not automatically bring is a cleaner bath. Whether fine residue is really the problem should be established first. An anode bag works at the anode; particles that enter the bath from other sources never reach it.

A 5 micron anode bag in precision plating

Where the finish on the part decides, this grade is the one intended for the job. Steel racks in a robust production line and a connector plating cell are not the same problem: on connectors, in PCB manufacturing and on decorative visible surfaces, small inclusions already show.

It also helps to be clear about where the bag sits. It works at the source, directly around the anode, while a circulation filter takes out what has already been distributed through the tank. This bag is a fine filter in the anode area, not a replacement for bath filtration.

That gives it a defined limit. Whatever you call it, fine filtration or microfiltration, the anode bag captures what forms at the anode and nothing beyond that.

What a 5 micron rating means and what it does not

This figure too is a nominal micron rating from the supplier, not a tested cut-off for the finished bag.

With a needle felt the number also has to be read differently than with a weave. A weave has defined openings; a felt has a pore system with a distribution. The rating describes how the material is specified, not a threshold above which everything is retained.

What is defensible is a comparison inside the range: this grade is specified finer than the 15 micron one. What that does in your bath is something the bath will show.

The six sizes are the same as for the standard grade, so an existing bag can be replaced one for one. For anything else we make the bag to measure and need the anode dimensions, the shape, the opening, the suspension, and the electrolyte with its concentration and temperature.

Frequently asked questions about the 5 micron anode bag

Almost every question on this grade comes back to the same assumption, that finer must be better.

Is the 5 micron grade better than the standard grade?

Not in general. It is specified finer and built from a different material. Whether that makes a difference in your process depends on whether fine residue is actually the cause of what you are seeing.

Does the finer grade slow the process down?

Its documented air permeability of 125 l·dm⁻²·min⁻¹ is above both other grades. That argues against the common assumption that finer always means less flow. It still does not predict what happens in your tank, because air figures do not transfer to liquids.

What is the difference between needle felt and woven fabric?

A woven fabric has regular openings between crossing yarns and separates at the surface. A needle felt is made of randomly laid, mechanically entangled fibres and separates across the cross section. That is why a finer rating here goes together with high permeability.

Is 5 microns a guaranteed cut-off?

No. It is a nominal rating. On a needle felt it describes how a pore system is specified, not a threshold. The defensible statement is the comparison inside the range.

Which electrolytes is it suitable for?

The material is polypropylene with a maximum working temperature of 90 °C. Suitability depends on the electrolyte, its concentration, temperature and operating conditions, and is assessed case by case.

Is there a finer grade?

In the active range this is the finest. If your process needs something beyond it, we will look at that together on the basis of electrolyte, anode geometry and requirement.

Will it fit my anode geometry?

The standard sizes cover common anode baskets and anode shapes. For anything different we make the bag to measure and need dimensions, shape, opening and suspension.
