The surface is the reason, not the micron figure
At a nominal 25 microns this grade carries the coarsest rating of the three. Anyone reading that as the simpler or cheaper option has it backwards. It is a specialist grade for a particular bath condition, and the micron figure is the least informative thing about it.
What matters is the construction. The fabric is woven from monofilaments, single smooth continuous filaments rather than spun staple fibre yarn. It is then calendered: the fabric passes under pressure between rollers and is compacted at the surface. You can feel the difference between a calendered and an uncalendered bag by hand. The result is a closed, smooth surface with defined openings.
Why that matters in organic-rich electrolytes
Electrolytes with a high organic content, bright nickel baths with brighteners among them, tend to cling to rough surfaces. A staple fibre weave with its slightly hairy surface offers comparatively many points to cling to.
A smooth, calendered monofilament surface offers fewer. That can reduce build-up and make cleaning easier. It does not mean nothing sticks, and it does not replace bath maintenance.
The documented air permeability is 25 l·dm⁻²·min⁻¹, the lowest of the three, below the 50 of the standard grade and well below the 125 of the 5 micron grade. That is the other side of a closed surface, and it belongs in your sizing.
Which baths this grade is intended for
It is intended for organic-rich electrolytes and for bright nickel baths that have been released for it. That wording is deliberately narrow.
Nickel baths differ considerably in composition, additive package, temperature and operating regime. There is no blanket release for all nickel baths and we do not offer the prospect of one. Before use, the specific bath belongs on the table: composition, organic load, the brighteners in use, temperature and operating conditions.
For an established standard process without a particular organic load, the 15 micron grade is the obvious choice.
Choosing a bright nickel anode bag
The most common trigger for this grade is a nickel electrolyte with additives. Anyone looking for a bright nickel anode bag is usually looking for exactly this construction, because brighteners and their breakdown products are organic compounds that settle on rough surfaces more readily than on smooth ones.
So a bright nickel anode bag is not a separate product group. It is a question of surface. A bag in a nickel electrolyte with a high organic load benefits from the calendered monofilament surface; in an additive-lean bath the benefit is much smaller and the lower permeability weighs more heavily.
None of this replaces bath maintenance or the release check. Which grade is intended for your bath is something we work out from composition, organic load, temperature and operating regime.

The three grades side by side
| 5 µm | 15 µm | 25 µm | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction | Needle felt | Woven staple fibre yarn | Monofilament fabric |
| Finish | Thermally smoothed | Washed, thermofixed | Calendered |
| Fabric weight | 400 g/m² | 320 g/m² | 370 g/m² |
| Air permeability | 125 l·dm⁻²·min⁻¹ | 50 l·dm⁻²·min⁻¹ | 25 l·dm⁻²·min⁻¹ |
| Reason to choose it | Finer residue | Established standard process | Organic-rich electrolyte |
The table shows why the micron figure does not carry the decision on its own. It falls from left to right, and so does permeability. Both rows run against intuition. The reason to choose sits in the last row.
Frequently asked questions about the 25 micron anode bag
The questions here are about bath suitability and about why a coarser rating is the specialist option.
Why is the specialist grade the coarsest one?
Because the micron figure is not the reason to choose it. What matters is the calendered monofilament surface, which offers organic compounds fewer points to cling to. The rating is a consequence of the construction, not a target.
Is this grade released for my nickel bath?
That can only be said for your specific bath. Nickel baths differ in composition, additives, temperature and operating regime. Send us those details and we will assess it.
Does the smooth surface prevent deposits?
It can reduce build-up and make cleaning easier. We do not promise freedom from deposits, and the bag does not replace bath maintenance.
What does calendered mean?
After weaving, the fabric is smoothed under pressure between rollers. The surfaces of the monofilaments are compacted, which closes the surface. It also reduces permeability.
What is the difference between monofilament and staple fibre yarn?
Monofilaments are single smooth continuous filaments. Staple fibre yarn is spun from short fibres and has a slightly hairy surface. For organic-rich baths the smooth version is the one intended.
Should I expect less flow?
Documented air permeability is 25 l·dm⁻²·min⁻¹, below both other grades. That is the other side of a closed surface. How far it shows in your bath depends on agitation and how the line is laid out.
Will it fit my anode geometry?
Five standard sizes cover common anode shapes. For anything different we make the bag to measure and need dimensions, shape, opening, suspension and the bath parameters.
