Paint sludge dewatering: process, material and selection

Paint sludge occurs wherever paint and water meet and then have to be separated again. The three most common sources:

Coagulation systems. The paint fraction is chemically flocculated out of the process water and either floats or settles. That mass has to be drawn off and dewatered.

Where paint sludge comes from

Tool cleaning. Washing out guns, rollers, brushes and containers produces a mixture of water and paint residues. In decorating firms, paint shops and joinery works this is the most common source.

Spray booths with wet scrubbing. Overspray is captured in water and has to be taken out of the circuit. Spray booth sludge filtration is the term the market uses for this step. A spray booth sludge filter in this sense is the nonwoven bag that takes the flocculated overspray, not a device inside the booth.

In all three cases the task is the same: the solids should stay in the filter, the water should drain away, and neither should take much effort. Whether the result is called paint sludge or coating sludge makes no difference to the choice of bag; floc structure and quantity are what decide. A filter bag for a coagulation system also has to fit the holder that is already there.

Why paint sludge behaves differently from mineral sludge

Mineral sludge consists of hard, mostly angular particles that build a porous filter cake. Paint sludge consists of soft, tacky, usually flocculated material. It tends to lie flat across the filter medium and seal it rather than build a permeable cake.

One consequence gives this product group its shape: for paint sludge, very open and very light nonwovens work better than dense ones. Where mineral sludge is handled by a 200 g/m² geotextile, here the materials are spunbond nonwovens at 15 or 30 grams per square metre.

The second consequence is about quantity. Paint sludge rarely arrives by the cubic metre. Instead of free-standing bags, flat bags in a box are used.

The dewatering box and the filter bag: the system

Dewatering here consists of two parts with clearly separated jobs.

The dewatering box in polypropylene is the holder. It keeps the bag in shape, carries the weight and lets the filtrate out. It measures 60 by 40 by 32 centimetres externally and 57 by 37 by 30.5 centimetres internally, and it is used again and again.

The nonwoven filter bag is the filter medium. It goes in, gets filled, comes out after dewatering and is disposed of together with the paint sludge. It is a single-use product and comes in packs of 25.

If you already have a holder in your coagulation system, you only need the bags. If you are starting from nothing, you need both.

Choosing between the two paint sludge filter bags

Both bags are made from thermally bonded polypropylene spunbond nonwoven with a hydrophilic finish and fit the same holder. The difference is in weight, thickness and openness.

With paint sludge, flocculation decides the clarity of the filtrate more than the structure of the nonwoven does. The choice between the two versions therefore follows floc stability and mechanical load.

How to start if this is new to you

Start with the 30 g/m² nonwoven. It is more forgiving and shows quickly whether retention is sufficient.

Dewater one real batch and watch three things: how fast the water drains, how clear the filtrate is, whether the bag holds when you lift it out.

If the water drains too slowly, switch to Color Drain.

If the filtrate is cloudy, look at the flocculation upstream before you change the nonwoven.

If the bag tears, stay with the 30 g/m² nonwoven and reduce the quantity per batch.

Because both versions come in packs of 25 and fit the same holder, this comparison costs very little and gives you an answer within a few days that no data sheet can provide.

Paint wash water filtration: what the bag does and does not do

The filtrate from paint sludge dewatering contains dissolved and emulsified constituents that the bag does not retain. Paint wash water filtration in this sense means solid and liquid separation, not water treatment. Whether the water may be discharged, run in a circuit or has to be handled as effluent depends on the paint systems in use, on the process chemicals and on your operating consents.

The classification of the dewatered paint sludge as waste likewise follows the materials involved. That assessment is made by your waste contractor.

Questions from paint shops and equipment builders

Will the bags fit my existing coagulation system?

Often yes, because the holders are similar. It is only binding once the internal dimensions have been compared. Send us the type of system and the box dimensions and we will check it, and make bags to your measurements where that is needed.

Can I use a sludge dewatering bag for paint sludge?

Technically you can, but it is rarely sensible. The 200 g/m² geotextile used in the sludge dewatering bags is considerably denser and blinds off faster with paint sludge. The reverse is also true: the light spunbond nonwovens are not designed for the loads of mineral sludge. The background is in the process guide.

How often does the bag need changing?

When drainage noticeably slows or the fill height is reached. There is no fixed interval, because the quantity depends on the operation.

Do I need a box at all for small quantities?

If you have a suitable basket or frame, that will do. The box is a ready-made, dimensionally stable solution with a matching internal size, and it stops the bag from sagging.

Is the system available in a larger size?

For larger quantities the options are either several boxes or a free-standing sludge dewatering bag. Which one fits depends on the quantity, the space and the consistency of the sludge.
