Ion Exchange Resin in Industrial Water Treatment: Resin, Vessel and Bag
An ion exchanger swaps dissolved ions for others. The resin carries functional groups that are initially occupied by exchangeable ions. When water flows through, the ions dissolved in it are exchanged against those.
In softening the target is calcium and magnesium, exchanged against sodium. In full demineralisation cation and anion exchangers work together, either in separate stages or as a mixed bed. That covers a broad field, from boiler feed water through process water to pre-treatment ahead of further stages.

A resin bag for a pure water system is therefore a handling component, not a process step.
Why the resin needs retention
Resin beads are in constant motion in service. They swell and shrink with the loading state, they are fluidised at every backwash, and every cycle produces a little breakage.
If resin reaches downstream equipment the consequences are unpleasant: blocked nozzles, fouled heat exchanger surfaces, damaged pumps, in the worst case resin in the product. Retention is therefore not a side issue of the design.
A bag is not the only solution; nozzle plates and screen inserts do the same job. The bag has a different advantage: it makes the resin manageable as a whole. Filling, fitting, removing and disposing all run through one unit instead of a loose bed.

Deionised water: what we commit to and what we do not
Deionised or demineralised water is a result of the whole system. Achievable conductivity, residual salt content and service life depend on the raw water, the resin, the regeneration, the way the plant is run and the instrumentation.

Does the bag determine the achievable water quality?
No. Capacity, selectivity and achievable quality come from the resin and the way the plant is run. The bag holds the resin in place and makes changeover manageable.
What information do you need for sizing?
Resin type, swollen grain size, resin quantity, vessel internal dimensions and orientation, operating temperature and change interval.
Is a bag better than a nozzle plate?
Not better, different. A nozzle plate is part of the plant and stays there. A bag makes the resin manageable as a unit and comes out together with it. Which suits depends on the change interval and on the plant.
Will I reach deionised water quality with your bag?
That question cannot be answered through the bag. Deionised water is a result of the whole system: raw water, resin, regeneration and plant management.
