Two routes when the capacity is exhausted

When an ion exchange resin has filled its exchange sites, two options are open. Regenerating means displacing the ions taken up and returning the resin to its starting state. Replacing means renewing the bed.

Which is right depends on the resin type, the plant, the age of the bed and the economics. There is no general rule, and certainly no general regeneration procedure: the chemistry differs considerably by resin type and belongs in your resin supplier’s documentation.

When regenerating pays and when a change is due

In favour of regeneration: an intact bed, a resin designed for it, and a plant that can handle the regenerants safely. In favour of replacement: clear capacity loss over several cycles, mechanical breakdown, organic fouling that no longer releases, and small plants without regeneration equipment.

One practical note from experience: if you are establishing the moment for a change from the differential pressure, you are usually late. Cycle length is the earlier signal.

At changeover: filling, swelling and the condition of the bag

The resin change is where this gets practical, and it is where the next cycle is decided.

Allow for swelling. Ion exchange resins change volume with the loading state. A bag filled to the brim when dry can be under tension in service. Leave room.

Separate the fines. Fresh resin contains breakage from transport and handling. A pre-rinse before first commissioning keeps that fraction out of the plant.

Check the bag, not just the resin. On a reusable version, seams, hook-and-loop surface and fabric belong checked before every refill. A loosened seam or a worn hook-and-loop surface holds no resin back, regardless of how fine the fabric is.

Document the change. Date, resin type, quantity and the condition of the bag. After three changes you have a history from which your own interval can be derived.

How often does ion exchange resin have to be replaced?

That depends on raw water, loading, regeneration frequency and mechanical duty. No blanket service life can be given. The trend in cycle length is the most usable signal.

Can I regenerate ion exchange resin myself?

That depends on the resin type and the plant. Your resin supplier’s specifications govern, including regenerants, concentration and safety measures.

Does the filter bag have to be replaced at the same time?

Not necessarily. The PP version for water treatment is intended for repeated use. What decides is the condition of seams, hook-and-loop surface and fabric.

How full may I fill the bag?

Not to the brim. The resin swells with the loading state, and room is needed for closing anyway. How much reserve is sensible depends on the resin type.

Do you supply the resin with it?

No. The bags are supplied empty. Resin and regenerants come from your existing suppliers.
